I recently came across this quote by the fabulous Diane Von Furstenberg, “The most important relationship is the one you have with yourself”.
This got me thinking. Self-care is not only making myself chamomile tea every night before bed, trying to work out three times a week, or taking care of my skin, it is creating a life that I don’t want to escape from.
Self-care is about building these daily routines and making them a part of who I am and who I want to be. It’s about feeling okay to take a breath and being confident in the direction I am headed.
Personally, I stress myself out over literally everything. Just last week I found myself crying over a rapidly approaching deadline that required a yes or no answer from me. The decision was whether or not I should apply for a study abroad program in Eastern Europe. This felt absolutely overwhelming to me.
Not only do I have zero money for this type of adventure, but I have never been out of the country, let alone been to places I can barely pronounce. Besides, maybe it would be better for me to wait to travel later in life when I have a stable job and income. All of this led to a complete meltdown.
I decided to throw in the towel and head home for the weekend. I took the time to talk with my family, breathe, and not worry about school, this impending deadline or anything else for that matter. Doing this, gave me the space I needed and led me to make my final decision with clarity.
Yes, the answer is yes! I do want to go! Not only do I want to go, I need to go. I am that person, the person who wants to have this kind of life experience.
Looking back now, I realize that my instinct to step back for a moment was me practicing self-care. In this instance, I recognized that I needed to take care of myself, but in other cases I think it’s human nature to put ourselves on the back burner. Why do we do this?
Self-care is taking a time out or giving ourselves a break so we can be better versions of ourselves. I think everyone knows that when you don’t take actions to take care of yourself it impacts your day greatly. Plus, everyone deserves a little TLC each and everyday, not just every once in a while.
I guess self-care to me means a lot of things. It means figuring out what your needs are and catering to them. It means taking the extra 5 minutes to breathe and compose yourself. It means doing all the little things to make your day better.
I think that a little self-care can go a long way. I know specifically for myself it makes me a better friend, daughter, granddaughter, employee, sister, and just a better version of myself. This doesn’t mean that there won’t be bad days, but maybe if we can just try to recognize how we can best help ourselves in those overwhelming moments, maybe they won’t last as long, or be as bad.
